As you will recall, I had contacted you a few weeks ago because during my review of the project permit documents at the Mill Valley City Hall, I found that the public bathrooms on the main floor had been closed for plumbing repair work but the general public was being allowed to use staff bathrooms on an inaccessible floor of the building while persons with mobility disabilities were provided an accessible portable toilet and sink at the front of the store (as you know, neither was accessible). Additionally, a new accessible parking space has recently been installed (with no accessible path-of-travel from that space to the store or the temporary store pharmacy in a trailer in the store parking lot) and although the entry to both the temporary trailer and store are blended with the vehicle way that pedestrians must be cross, to date, no detectable warning surface has been installed, probably because it wasn’t required as part of the permit work. The access violations in the Safeway case and others access violation cases that I have brought to the attention of the City of Mill Valley and California Department of Justice are typical of the kind of access violation cases individuals with disabilities must face when in their communities. The access violations that are and will be found when individuals with disabilities attempt to function in public facilities are created by the lack of knowledge and effort on the part of public permit agencies (building departments) to assure that permitted projects within their jurisdiction meet access codes and when built and are accessible.

-ne Today is the birthday of Ray Bradbury, the American writer best known for his science fiction novels and short stories. His first success came in 1950 when he published The Martian Chronicles, a novel made up of a number of Bradbury’s short stories about the human colonization of Mars (1).In 1953, he published his most popular and critically acclaimed novel Fahrenheit 451, a story about a dark future in which books are illegal, and instead of putting out fires, firemen answer calls to burn illegal caches of books. Montag will join them with his book, Ecclesiastes.Bradbury published over 30 books, almost 600 short stories, as well as a number of poems, essays, and plays. Along with Fahrenheit 451, his most read book, his short stores are published in numerous anthologies and textbooks.Fahrenheit 451 began as a short story called The Fireman published in Galaxy Science Fiction Magazine in 1950. (He spent .80 to complete the first draft). When he wasn’t typing furiously against the clock, Bradbury would go upstairs to explore the library:There I strolled, lost in love, down the corridors, and through the stacks, touching books, pulling volumes out, turning pages, thrusting volumes back, drowning in all the good stuffs that are the essence of the libraries. What a place, don’t you agree, to write a novel about burning books in the Future.Bradbury had more than just a love affair with books. People could go into the library and get all the books they needed in literature or social economics or politics or engineering and take the books out on the lawn and sit down and read.

The following is from: http://www.ewtn.com/faith/teachings/marye6.htmAd caeli ReginamEncyclical of Pope Pius XII on proclaiming the Queenship Of Mary, 11 October 1954.Excerpts from sections 1-40.From the earliest ages of the Catholic Church a Christian people, whether in time of triumph or more especially in time of crisis, has addressed prayers of petition and hymns of praise and veneration to the Queen of Heaven. And never has that hope wavered which they placed in the Mother of the Divine King, Jesus Christ; nor has that faith ever failed by which we are taught that Mary, the Virgin Mother of God, reigns with a mother’s solicitude over the entire world, just as she is crowned in heavenly blessedness with the glory of a Queen. From early times Christians have believed, and not without reason, that she of whom was born the Son of the Most High received privileges of grace above all other beings created by God. He will reign in the house of Jacob forever,[5] the Prince of Peace,[6] the King of Kings and Lord of Lords.[7] And when Christians reflected upon the intimate connection that obtains between a mother and a son, they readily acknowledged the supreme royal dignity of the Mother of God.Hence it is not surprising that the early writers of the Church called Mary the Mother of the King and the Mother of the Lord, basing their stand on the words of St. Gabriel the archangel, who foretold that the Son of Mary would reign forever,[8] and on the words of Elizabeth who greeted her with reverence and called her the Mother of my Lord.[9] Thereby they clearly signified that she derived a certain eminence and exalted station from the royal dignity of her Son.So it is that St. Ephrem, burning with poetic inspiration, represents her as speaking in this way: Let Heaven sustain me in its embrace, because I am honored above it. For heaven was not Thy mother, but Thou hast made it Thy throne. How much more honorable and venerable than the throne of a king is his mother.[10] And in another place he thus prays to her: . . . Majestic and Heavenly Maid, Lady, Queen, protect and keep me under your wing lest Satan the sower of destruction glory over me, lest my wicked foe be victorious against me.[11]She is called by St. John Damascene: Queen, ruler, and lady,[23] and also the Queen of every creature.[24] Another ancient writer of the Eastern Church calls her favored Queen, the perpetual Queen beside the King, her son, whose snow-white brow is crowned with a golden diadem.[25]As We have already mentioned, Venerable Brothers, according to ancient tradition and the sacred liturgy the main principle on which the royal dignity of Mary rests is without doubt her Divine Motherhood. But the Blessed Virgin Mary should be called Queen, not only because of her Divine Motherhood, but also because God has willed her to have an exceptional role in the work of our eternal salvation. What more joyful, what sweeter thought can we have–as Our Predecessor of happy memory, Pius XI wrote –than that Christ is our King not only by natural right, but also by an acquired right: that which He won by the redemption? Would that all men, now forgetful of how much we cost Our Savior, might recall to mind the words, You were redeemed, not with gold or silver which perishes, . . . but with the precious blood of Christ, as of a Lamb spotless and undefiled.[43] We belong not to ourselves now, since Christ has bought us at a great price.”[44]/[45]Now, in the accomplishing of this work of redemption, the Blessed Virgin Mary was most closely associated with Christ; and so it is fitting to sing in the sacred liturgy: “Near the cross of Our Lord Jesus Christ there stood, sorrowful, the Blessed Mary, Queen of Heaven and Queen of the World.”[46] Hence, as the devout disciple of St. Anselm (Eadmer, ed.) wrote in the Middle Ages: “just as . . . God, by making all through His power, is Father and Lord of all, so the blessed Mary, by repairing all through her merits, is Mother and Queen of all; for God is the Lord of all things, because by His command He establishes each of them in its own nature, and Mary is the Queen of all things, because she restores each to its original dignity through the grace which she merited.[47]From these considerations, the proof develops on these lines: if Mary, in taking an active part in the work of salvation, was, by Gods design, associated with Jesus Christ, the source of salvation itself, in a manner comparable to that in which Eve was associated with Adam, the source of death, so that it may be stated that the work of our salvation was accomplished by a kind of recapitulation,[49] in which a virgin was instrumental in the salvation of the human race, just as a virgin had been closely associated with its death

Baltimore Crime: August 22

October 12th, 2008 by admin

Array-ne Shortly after midnight on 22 August 1831, a small group of enslaved Virginians commenced a massacre in Southampton County, a stagnant and isolated region comprised of small farming families and the people whom they owned. The Constitutional Whig, a Richmond newspaper, soon found itself apologizing to the people of Southampton for initially questioning this sort of brutality. Not having witnessed the horrors committed by the blacks, or seen the unburied and disfigured remains of their wives and children, we were unprepared to understand their feelings, and could not at first admit of their extenuation, which a closer observation of the atrocities of the insurgents suggested . Let the fact not be doubted by those whom it most concerns, that another such insurrection will be the signal for the extermination of the whole black population in the quarter of the state where it occurs. After Nat Turner’s execution on November 11, his body was dissected and his skin allegedly rendered into grease.

-ne Cuba is establishing a training program for Communist agents and guerrillas to spread the Communist revolution throughout Latin America, the United States charged at a meeting of the Organization of American States on this day in 1960. We are deeply concerned over the fact that in connection with these events, journalists, members of the government, labor union leaders and even certain high government officials have repeatedly praised warmly the way of life prevailing in those nations, and have suggested in speeches delivered both within and outside of Cuba coincidences and similarities of aims and procedures between the social revolutions of those countries and the Cuban revolution, the U.S. statement said.

He was taken to shock trauma.I usually don’t include white-collar crime, but given the City’s tacit assent to part I crime in Baltimore, it just seems that a link to the Examiner article on the ongoing State investigation of key staffers of City Council President Sheila Dixon is appropriate.

Black college enrollment in South passes milestoneStory Highlights• In the 16 states measured, the number of blacks enrolled in colleges has risen• Blacks now total 21 percent of all college students• Overall blacks represent 31.4 percent of all Georgia college studentsRALEIGH, North Carolina (AP) — For the first time ever in the South, blacks are as well represented on college campuses as they are in the region’s population as a whole — something not yet true of the country overall. The milestone is noted in a new fact book to be released Monday by the Southern Regional Education Board, a nonprofit organization that promotes education. In the 16 states measured, the number of blacks enrolled in colleges has risen by more than half over the last decade. They now make 21 percent of college students and 19 percent of the overall population. The number represents progress but it also has to be seen in context. A major contributing factor is the South’s rapidly growing Hispanic population, which has reduced the proportion of the population that is black, and thereby made the milestone easier to reach mathematically. And educators also stressed that the number should not obscure the persistent achievements gaps affecting blacks both in the South and nationally. In particular, black enrollment rates for college-age students, while improving, still lag well behind those of whites, as do the graduation rates of black college students. With a college degree now almost a prerequisite for high-paying jobs, those achievement gaps pose an economic threat — and the South will be on the cutting edge of that. In 2005 about 61 percent of public high school graduates in the South were white, the education board said, but by 2018 that figure is expected to be 45 percent.Weve made tremendous progress, dont get me wrong, board President Dave Spence said. But, he added, unless achievement gaps narrow, were going to be in trouble. We already are in trouble, but well be in more trouble seven or eight years down the road. The latest report may not reflect precisely what many consider the South, because the 16 states it covers also include border states Kentucky, Delaware, West Virginia and Maryland.Still, the report reflects the reality that many more Southern blacks are enrolling in college. In those states, about 1.1 million black students were enrolled in college in the fall of 2005, 52 percent more than a decade earlier. The increase have come largely at new and expanding public, traditionally white universities and two-year colleges rather than at historically black colleges, which for many years shouldered nearly all the burden of higher education for Southern blacks. Many of those schools still exist, but their share of black enrollment in the region has slipped from 26 percent to 19 percent over the last decade.Weve removed a lot of the barriers and accepted that we will have to provide higher levels of learning support in the short-term,” said Erroll Davis, who oversees the 33 institutions in the University System of Georgia, noting minority students arrive on campus with lower levels of college preparedness on average.Overall, blacks represent 31.4 percent of all Georgia college students, about 1 percent higher than the proportion in the overall population. The proportion of blacks in the state university system is about 24 percent — higher than a decade ago but still below the population as a whole. The number of Hispanics in higher education in the South has also shot up sharply over the last decade — by about 71 percent to about 552,000 in the region the board studied. But unlike for blacks, it remains well below the proportion of Hispanics in the regions population.Nationally, 25 percent of Hispanics aged 18-to-24 attend college, compared to 33 percent of blacks and 44 percent of whites. That means the fastest-growing major group has the lowest college-going rate — an alarming long-term threat to the goal of increasing the percentage of workers with college degrees. The boards report did not calculate graduation rates for its region, but an analysis done by The Education Trust, a nonprofit group, on behalf of The Associated Press calculated the graduation rates for the 16 states in the boards report. The analysis, which applies only to four-year colleges, found six-year graduation rates of 40 percent for blacks, 46 percent for Hispanics, and 56 percent for whites.Nationally, the rate is 41 percent for blacks, 44 percent for Hispanics and 60 percent for whites.Copyright 2007 The Associated Press.Mr. Starks

October 11th, 2008 by admin

Array FEC) brought by Congressmen Chris Shays and Marty Meehan, and supported as amici by Senators Russ Feingold and John McCain, that struck down several Federal Election Commission regulations interpreting the McCain-Feingold bill on the grounds that the regulations are too lenient. My initial response to just one part of the decision:Bloggers Beware: When the Reform Advocates Claim that they don’t want to get you, they are probably not telling the truth. The issue on the internet is a different part of the statute, but like the portion of the statute at issue in Shays, it makes no mention of being limited to internet communications that are made for a fee, only that they be communications to the general public. So when the reform community - including Representatives Shays and Meehan, and Senators McCain and Feingold, claim that they only want to regulate paid ads, they appear to be talking out of both sides of their mouths.

Muslims who do not accept this goal are considered to be such bad Muslims that they are considered heretics, which, in Muslim society, can bring the death penalty.Muslims are taught that it is not permissible to have loyalty to man-made law, or to man-made administrative units such as Britain; the only permissible loyalties are to the law of Allah as contained in the Koran (sharia), and to the Ummah, which is the collective Muslim population of the world. We often hear about the lack of assimilation of Muslims into Infidel communities; Heart-felt assmiliation is not possible, unless a Muslim is willing to give up the fundamental tenets of his religion which forbid it.When Muslims are born and educated OUTSIDE THE UMMAH, they feel pressure to prove that being born and educated outside the Muslim world has not affected their loyalty to Islam. his conviction that he will somehow acquire status within the group, with all the respect and admiration to follow, is what leads the young person to kill himself and others. All his pre-death fantasies are commonly reinforced by send-off ceremonies, pictures and videos taken during the ceremonies, the display after death of the pictures, the praise heaped upon him to the dead martyr’s family, the examples he becomes for small children yet to become martyrs, and, of course, the assurance that there will be immediate admission to Paradise, where he can spend his time having sex with pearl-skinned boys and continuously recycled virgins (or white grapes, if recent linguistic research is accurate).Terrorism of any sort, but especially martyrdom, is the solution to all the young male Muslim’s fantasies, especially if he is born among the Infidel, where the need for proof of solidarity with the Ummah is greater than it is anywhere else.

Where did you perform most?

Outside of Vegas I worked a lot in Florida, where it paid well. I also worked Canada, Mexico City (at the El Presidente, no less), Hawaii, Japan, Hong Kong, Guam–that’s why my life story is called Have Tassels, Will Travel! At one point I did 25 towns in 32 weeks, working six days each week with one day for travel. I did over 25000 performances. I worked in in Europe–Barcelona, Paris, Italy, Switzerland, Germany. I used to sit on the plane and the airline magazine would list all the stops, all the little red lines going to each city, and I worked almost every city United Airlines served. You could really make a living in burlesque then. I would make 1200-2500 a week in the mid 80s, and they paid our transportation and hotels, usually.

What is your fondest memory of all that traveling?
Japan. I loved it. I worked at Nichigeki Theater in Tokyo in 1969, a theater in the round with the stage at the bottom. The stage came up from the basement and behind me was a waterfall with silver streamer lights. There was a 28 piece orchestra. The stage came up and I was in a solid rhinestone gown, so heavy. The gown was from Bebe Hughes, white lace with a rhinestone in each flower, and over about three years we had covered the whole dress with all these rhinestones imported from Paris. On my opening night 5000 people were there and when they all applauded at same time it was thunderous. I would go to make a move but they wouldn’t stop applauding, screaming, whistling, stomping! I couldn’t even hear that huge orchestra, they were so excited. I was thinking, This is what its all about.” I had a beautiful dressing room, and woman that helped me dress, bowls of candy, bottles of champagne. They gave me a pearl ring. I felt like Gypsy Rose Lee.

Your mother was with you this year at the Exotic World event. What did she think of it?
Let me tell you about my mother. I was working at the Galaxy Club in San Francisco in the 60s, this great space-themed place with girls in silver skirts . An artist came in and sort of strategically covered over our parts, painted us all up, and we were to stand on these pillars all through the club. The pillars rotated and wed each strike a pose like a psychedelic statue. So I was doing this, and I felt this negative energy like I smelled something burning and then felt really self-conscious. I looked down and there was my mother looking at me with her arms folded. I screamed, My mother, oh my god it’s my mother! I leaped down and ran to the dressing room and grabbed my coat. She caught up with me and she wasnt too thrilled, obviously. I said, “Mom, I make 350-450 a week, 700 a week in Vegas,” and she got cool with it–what was she gonna do? Shes corporate, Im not. Shes worked for the May Company her whole life, my dad died in the 40s, and shes 82 and still works five days a week, and she does her own gardening. This year she came to Exotic World and she hadnt seen me dance since 1979, and the audience was so loving. They gave me their soul and hearts. She felt it and she said, By God, you can still dance. Thats all she said. Then she goes home next day and I later heard there are pix of her with boas everywhere in the house! She ranted and raved about how beautiful my performance was. She always supported me but isnt much the kind of person to tell me. The Sissy Butch Brothers did a documentary and stopped by my moms house and asked her, “Have you supported Angel all this years?” and my mom said, “Ive always loved her and shes always made me proud.” She tells me she loves me every day but to tell me that I made her proud, my heart! At 60 something years old, you could say a little late, but still not too late!

-ne The Tax Payer’s Alliance have released the results of their latest survey on taxation, spending and better government. The actual figure for 2006 is 35 per cent.70% believe they are paying more tax or significantly more tax than in 1997 and only 1 in 10 think they are paying about the same.Two-thirds believe that the Government spends too much and therefore taxes were too high.A massive majority (79%) think taxes will be higher in three years time than they are now. More Labour voters think the money has generally been spent badly than spent well.A clear majority (54%) think the government has got worse at spending taxpayers money over the last decade, with only one in ten (11%) saying it has got better. When asked what they think causes wasteful spending, big majorities blame bureaucracy (62%) and the habit of constant changes, reorganisations and re-branding (66%).A super-majority (82%) oppose any increase in the tax burden - a major shift from the 1990s when more supported tax increases to generate extra investment for public services.

She’s attained the goodly age of 82, and I’m now going to be in the market for one of those belated birthday cards instead of a proper sent on time birthday card. I’m telling myself that this is a good thing actually, that it’ll mean her getting more mail about the time the festivities have died down, but I don’t quite believe it. At the time I wasn’t quite sure what had hit me, other than the fact that it had gigantic pillowy bosoms, a wonderful smile and smelled of scented talcum powder. If she had unkind thoughts about me, she kept them to herself. We had good times on that visit. We visited Santa Cruz, where she’d once lived, and drove across the Golden Gate Bridge, which had opened just around the time her family had moved away from the Bay Area. However, given that there were so many years when she sent me cards and got no acknowledgment, it’s only fair.In fact, now that I think about it, there’s no time like the present to go write her a note and let her know that I love her. Eighty two isn’t an immense age, but it’s old enough that one shouldn’t waste any time.

Keep in mind that for the past few weeks they’ve said we’ve actually run a bit further than our planned distance, but even if we didn’t, that’s still a twelve and a half minute mile (according to my running buddy’s fancy whatchadometer, we ran 11:50/mile). This year I am even cross-training, or in other words, trying to lose some of the schlub I gained in the past year.
